What's different in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia has five brackets and, since 2025, the same basic personal amount for everyone.

  • The basic personal amount is $11,932 regardless of income. Until 2024 it shrank for higher earners; that rule is gone.
  • Five brackets: 8.79%, 14.95%, 16.67%, 17.5% and 21% above $157,124, one of the highest top rates in Canada.
  • A 20% credit (up to $2,000) applies to labour-sponsored fund shares bought through payroll.

Example: tax on $75,000 in Nova Scotia

On a $75,000 salary in Nova Scotia, taxable income is $74,273 federally, once the enhanced part of CPP is deducted. Each slice is taxed at its own rate:

Nova Scotia

  • 8.79% on $30,995 = $2,724.46
  • 14.95% on $30,996 = $4,633.90
  • 16.67% on $12,282 = $2,047.41

$9,405.77 before credits → $7,948.41 after credits.

Federal

  • 14% on $58,523 = $8,193.22
  • 20.5% on $15,750 = $3,228.75

$11,421.97 before credits → $8,258.60 after credits.

Total income tax: $16,207.01, an average rate of 21.6%, even though the top slice is taxed at 35.7% combined. Moving into a higher bracket never makes you lose money: only the dollars above the threshold pay the higher rate.
